After signing Derek Lowe to a minor league deal on Wednesday, Rangers general manager Jon Daniels says that Lowe was brought in to help out in the Rangers bullpen.
Lowe has been a starter since the 2002 season, but he did serve as the Red Sox closer from 1999-2001, with a career high of 42 saves in the 2000 season.
There is no chance Lowe could become the closer in Texas unless there were a rash of injuries, but due to the poor performance of the Rangers bullpen so far this spring, this move is a low risk signing that could have high dividends if Lowe can get back to his old form. Lowe would be a nice piece to add as a long reliever or even as a seventh inning guy as a bridge to Jason Frasor and Joe Nathan.
The Rangers are saying that Lowe will throw a bullpen session on Friday and then pitch in some live batting practice sessions over the weekend before he will be pitching in a game, more than likely sometime next week.
