The Seattle Mariners have accumulated quite a group of outfielders in the Great Northwest.
The Mariners added Michael Morse and Raul Ibanez this off-season, adding to a group that included Franklin Gutierrez and Michael Saunders already. Seattle will have to make some tough roster decisions this spring, including what to do with Casper Wells.
Wells broke into the big leagues during the 2010 season with the Detroit Tigers, playing in 36 games and collecting 30 hits in just 93 at-bats, good for a .323 batting average. During 2011, Wells saw time in 64 games for Detroit before being traded to Seattle. Wells appeared in 31 games for Seattle, launching seven home runs in just 102 at-bats for the Mariners. Last season, Wells appeared in 93 games for Seattle, hitting just .228 but launching 10 long balls.
This spring, Wells has been battling for playing time in a crowded Seattle outfield. Wells tried to prove his worth on Monday, going 3-4 at the plate with a double, a triple and five RBI in the Mariners 16-6 win over Colorado. Wells only has a batting average of .228 this spring, but if he can prove that he can produce runs, Seattle will be forced to put him in the lineup or trade him to someone who needs an outfielder.
